Midwalls are anonymous walls that divide properties. Although they do not play any role in the exterior appearance of the building, they may end up exposed to the public in a permanent provisional state due to changes in urban planning. When the case arises, a landscape discontinuity is generated, a break in the urban fabric that can cause serious structural and habitability problems in the affected and neighboring buildings, in addition to the remarkable visual impact it has on public space. Twenty-five years ago, with the aim of eliminating these urban discontinuities and creating new facades that integrate into the urban landscape, the Plan for the Remodeling of Halfways in Barcelona was launched. In the framework of the nomination of Barcelona as the World Capital of Architecture 2026 by the UNESCO-UIA, the organization Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the Barcelona City Council are launching this international competition of ideas to remodel ten half-timbered walls, spread across the city's ten districts, with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy in Barcelona, and calls on the global community of Architects to participate. The jury of the competition selected for each of the locations a winning proposal, as well as a second and a third prize, from among those submitted for each location. The winning proposals will be implemented throughout 2026 within the framework of the programme of activities and as an enduring material legacy of Barcelona 2026, the UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture.
